Located in Bern canton in Switzerland, Lauterbrunnen road is a scenic road that crosses the beautiful traditional Swiss village of the same name. It should obviously be on your itinerary if you are in Switzerland.

The valley of Lauterbrunnen is famous for its waterfalls. In fact, there are 72 of them in the Valley. The most knowns are the Trümmelbach Falls.

As you can see in the picture, if you make a trip to Lauterbrunnen you will see many of these waterfalls from the road. That definitely makes any road trip in this valley awesome!

Itinerary to Lauterbrunnen scenic road.

It’s pretty simple: The valley is a dead-end road so you can’t miss it! You will start your itinerary from Interlaken (or the A8 highway exit number 25) and follow the Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen directions. In summer you can also use the Lötschberg car transport train to Interlaken via the Grimsel Pass or the Simplon Pass from the south.

You can make a detour by Grindelwald village it’s also a very cozy one!

One of the best things to do is to go to the Jungfrau Glacier. To get there you’ll have to take one of the most scenic trains in the world. Indeed, the railway, inaugurated in 1912, goes to the station of Jungfraujoch which is situated 3454 meters above the sea and it’s made this the highest train station and railway in the world.

One of the pics of the Lauterbrunnen area is the famous Schilthorn. It’s famous because it appears in the 1969 James Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. You can also access that location using the cable.

Don’t forget to make a stop in Mürren village, also a must-do. You can access Mürren only by cable car from Lauterbrunnen

There are also many hikes for those who want to take a rest from the asphalt road!

Try some local food in a restaurant, such as a”fondue” a melted cheese dish.

Is Lauterbrunnen the Tolkien’s Middle Earth?

At only 19 years old, J.R.R. Tolkien travels through Switzerland and stay in 1912 in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. As a result, it is said that the landscapes he saw there inspired him for his Middle Earth’s universe.

In fact, you can find many common points between Lauterbrunnen’s geography and the one in The Hobbits and in The Lord of The Rings books. Indeed just take a look at the map of the lord of the rings and will see from where the inspiration of Tolkien comes.
